Bob’s Famous Foodmart and Discount Liquors has its origins back to 1955, when Bob DiMatteo started the store with his parents, Dominic and Mary DiMatteo.  It was the day after Mother’s Day and Bob claimed he gave his mother a “Mother’s Day present she would never forget”.  Bob’s Famous Foodmart remains a family enterprise. Bob’s son, Ron DiMatteo, is now the co-owner along  with George Mather, Jr.  Bob’s wife, Joan DiMatteo , still runs the gift card section of the store.  With social media growing beyond belief, the greeting card section has been reduced, giving “Joanie” some well-deserved time off.  Her time at Bob’s Famous Foodmart is better spent as a marketing consultant, historical advisor, public relations, and overall quality control.  She is integral in keeping up the image of the store.

George and Ron have been friends since birth.  George’s parents, George Sr. and Elaine Mather, ran three businesses in the other three units at Birch Street Plaza.  Elaine and George still own and operate Cut and Curl Beauty Shop and sub-lease space to their Nephew, Steve Mather, “The Barber” at Comb and Clipper. Jill Russell, Bob and Joan’s niece, manages the liquor section of the store, acts as General Manager, and her children work as cashiers and stock help. The DiMatteo’s and the Mather’s remain lifelong friends.

All of Bob’s employees are treated as family. Each member of the top management has been at Bob’s for almost 20 years plus respectively.  Bob’s Famous Foodmart and Discount Liquors has been a place where hundreds, maybe thousands, of people can claim they had their “first Job”. Bob DiMatteo started the store with a “one-stop shopping” idea that unites liquor, cards and gifts, deli, and grocery under one roof.  The store carries on that same idea and has evolved to keep up with “the times” and is constantly changing to suit its customer’s needs.

Bob’s has developed slogans such as “Your One Stop Store”, and “A Full Liquor Store and a Whole Lot More”, and “We’re not a convenience store, we are just a real convenient store”.  While convenience is a prime focus of the 5,000 sq. ft. store, Bob’s offers much more than convenience. Not only does Bob’s offer variety not commonly found in a convenience store, Bob’s also has an extensive liquor department and a full deli with sliced meats and cheeses. Bob’s Deli food can be enjoyed on premise in the café which serves hot meals all day long.  Bob’s Famous Foodmart and Discount Liquors is always trying to do something new.  The whole staff is trained to always listen to our customers.  One visit is all it takes to understand how Bob wanted his customers treated and his attitude is still alive in the store today.  A veteran worker, Phyllis Rock was once quoted in 1980 saying, ”After so many years , you get to know the people who come into your store.  It’s nice to feel like you work in a friendly place that people want to come to”.  We still hold true to that quote.  Stop in and see for yourself.
